No one would argue (even those who love to argue!) that the world is noisier these days than it has ever been and, in some cities and countries reaching nearly intolerable decibels. Wars, bombs, and explosions have increased around the world. Antagonistic political and religious fanatics shout at each other until all that remains is a cacophony of inarticulate noise. Faster, noisier, and more “extreme” seems to be the consumer demand. What doesn’t annoy our ears, affronts our eyes. Once simply unsightly billboards are now digital and light the night with advertisements. Uninvited ads sail across our computer monitors like phantoms, and then stop, concealing our ability to read more relevant words underneath them. And, frequently, what is seen, is obscene. Acts of violence and catastrophic events that have caused pain and suffering are shown over and over again, in full color, on the news. Where can we go to find peace? How can we get there from here?

Peace can be found within each of us, at the still, quiet core of our being. And we get there through meditation.

By closing our eyes we turn away from the world, and by turning within, we find that what seemed only moments before to be impossible and elusive, was there all the time…peace. As we slow the pace of our breathing and allow our body to relax… we find peace. Through the slowing of the excessive activity of our thoughts, until they gently drift, like falling leaves, and settle into quietness…we find peace.

This type of meditation clarifies every cell, fiber, and tissue of our being. Therefore, this type of meditation can be healing. The jabber of our mind momentarily stops with the type of meditation. Therefore, this type of meditation can be revealing.

The distresses of body and mind depart when we meditate in this way, and they frequently do not return when we open our eyes and move out into the world again. The peace that we have recognized within assumes the form of our actions in the world.

It is, perhaps, more vital than ever for every one of us to meditate — to bring forth peace in ourselves and, therefore, bring peace to the world.
